Custom-Shielded Storage Cabinet for Ge-68 PET Phantom

Custom-Shielded Storage Cabinet for Ge-68 PET Phantom

APEX Medical Solutions engineered a bespoke shielded storage cabinet for a European nuclear-medicine customer who required a precise, purpose-built solution to house their Ge-68 PET calibration phantom. Working against a tightly defined shielding-equivalent and dimensional specification, our engineering team finalised the solution in the shortest possible time and delivered a complete technical drawing in which the Ge-68 Phantom is rendered at equal scale inside the cabinet — so the customer could verify fit, clearance and layout at a glance.

The Customer

The customer is a European facility active in nuclear medicine and radiopharmaceutical operations, where calibrated Ge-68 sources are routinely handled as part of PET quality control and imaging verification. As with most radiopharmacy environments, radiation safety, regulatory compliance and operational convenience are all critical, and the storage solution had to align fully with the facility’s established procedures and workflow.

The Challenge

The customer required a dedicated storage container for their Ge-68 Phantom, with very specific requirements on both the shielding equivalent and the overall dimensional envelope. Standard, off-the-shelf containers did not match the exact specification. The solution had to:

-Provide the specified level of radiation attenuation for the intended Ge-68 source;

-House the phantom within a precisely defined cabinet footprint and height, while leaving practical headroom and clearance for safe loading, retrieval and handling;

-Support easy, controlled access during routine quality-control workflows;

-Be delivered quickly, with clear and unambiguous engineering documentation so the customer could approve the design with confidence.

Our Approach & Solution

Rather than offering a generic catalogue product, our engineering team engaged directly with the customer’s technical and radiation-safety representatives to translate their shielding and dimensional requirements into a manufacturable design. Through close consultation and rapid iteration, we locked the final solution in the shortest possible time and produced a complete technical drawing of the storage cabinet.

A defining feature of the design documentation is the equal-scale representation of the target source: the Ge-68 Phantom is drawn at true scale within the cabinet, so the customer could immediately see — and verify — how the phantom sits inside the enclosure, how much clearance remains above and around it, and how the cabinet footprint fits their facility. This visual clarity removed ambiguity and accelerated the approval process.

Key Custom Features

Shielding equivalent tailored to the customer’s specification for the Ge-68 source;

Outer envelope engineered to 50 cm (W) × 40 cm (D) × 65 cm (H);

Phantom (Ø 13.7 cm × 30 cm) seated at the bottom centre of the cabinet with clear headroom and surrounding clearance;

Openable cabinet door with handle and locking latches for controlled, convenient access;

Caster-mounted stainless-steel construction for durability, mobility and easy integration into the hot-lab / quality-control environment.

Results & Value Delivered

Fast time-to-solution: the design was locked in the shortest possible timeframe to meet the customer’s schedule;

Crystal-clear communication: the equal-scale technical drawing let the customer validate fit, clearance and layout instantly, with no ambiguity;

Safety and compliance: the cabinet meets the customer’s specified shielding requirement and supports safe source handling;

Confidence in delivery: a purpose-built, verified design ready for fabrication and installation.

Why APEX Medical Solutions

APEX Medical Solutions combines deep expertise in nuclear-medicine radiation protection with genuine private, custom engineering. We do not limit customers to standard catalogue products. Where shielding equivalent, dimensions or workflow requirements are specific, our engineers design to your specification, produce clear technical documentation — including equal-scale representations of your source and its enclosure — and carry the project from requirement to delivery. When the solution has to be exactly right, APEX is your partner for bespoke radiation-protection equipment.
